ABOUT TORONTO

Toronto is situated on the northern shore of Lake Ontario. Toronto is the capital of Ontario province and largest city in Canada. The name Toronto is derived from a native Iroquois word, but the city was originally named York by British settlers and then renamed Toronto in the 1850s. Starting with the Great Potato Famine in Ireland, waves of immigrants arrived throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century as Toronto grew rapidly and became an ethnically diverse population.

Spurring growth was the building of the Toronto Union Station and railroad service to the upper Great Lakes during the 1860s, in addition to existing steamboats plying the St. Lawrence river.

Today Toronto is the economic, cultural, and financial center of Canada, served by Lester B Pearson International Airport. The LINK train runs all day within the airport, connecting the Value park lot and garage with terminal 1 and terminal 3, with a stop at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel. From Pearson airport, public transit buses connect with the subway or downtown. Pacific Western Airport Express buses run downtown.

The city is built on a grid pattern and thus easy to navigate, with most attractions within the downtown core of central Toronto, and the financial district and stock exchange on the south side. The theater district runs along King Street, with the Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra theaters plus the Opera house, among others. Visit during early July for the Toronto Fringe Festival, featuring over 150 plays plus dancing and other performances.

Nearby is Eaton Center shopping mall plus the Air Canada Center and Rogers Center, which are Toronto's top sporting venues. On the northwest side of the central core is the sprawling University of Toronto St.George campus, with a variety of bookstores close by. On Spadina Avenue is Chinatown with many shops and restaurants, and nearby is the unique Kensington Market area with a congregation of bars, boutiques, open air markets, and restaurants within a few blocks.
